Notifications and emails

What the bell tells you about, how new, seen and read notifications work, which emails Measure Map Online sends, and which ones you can turn off.

Measure Map Online tells you when something happens that concerns you: someone shares a project with you or comments on it, a payment fails, a client asks for an estimate. You see it in the bell in the dashboard, and for most things you also get an email.

The bell#

The bell is at the top right of the dashboard, and in the top toolbar of the map editor. A number on it counts the notifications that arrived since you last opened it.

When a notification arrives while you are using the app, it also pops up for a few seconds at the bottom of the screen. Each one pops up once; what arrived while you were away is waiting in the bell.

Press the bell to see your latest 50 notifications, newest first. Each shows who or what it is about and when it happened.

  • Press a notification to go to what it is about: the project, your subscription, your organisation.
  • Some have a button for the one thing to do: Update card after a failed payment, Confirm payment when your bank asks you to confirm one.
  • Mark all as read marks the whole list as read.
  •  Notification settings opens your email settings.

New, seen and read#

A notification goes through three states:

  1. New: it has arrived and the bell counts it.
  2. Seen: you opened the bell. The count goes away, but the notification stays highlighted, with a dot, until you deal with it.
  3. Read: you pressed it, or pressed Mark all as read.

So opening the bell to glance at it does not lose track of what you have not looked at yet.

What you are notified about#

  • Projects: someone shares a project or a folder with you; someone comments on one of your projects. See sharing projects and comments.
  • Open Guest: a guest asks you for an estimate; your spending is on course to pass your warning budget; your budget limit is reached. See Open Guest.
  • Your subscription: your trial starts; you subscribe or change plan; your subscription becomes active, is cancelled, expires or has a payment problem; a payment fails; your bank needs you to confirm a payment; a plan change that waited too long for its payment is dropped.
  • Your organisation: an organisation invites you to join it; your role changes; you are removed from it; someone you invited joins or declines. See members and roles.
  • Your account: its email address is changed.

An invitation to join an organisation is a question rather than news: the app asks you to accept or decline it when you next open it, once a session, until you answer. See members and roles.

Choose your emails#

Open Profile & account > Email notifications, or press in the bell. Four kinds of email can be turned off:

  • Project activity: When someone comments on a project you're part of, or removes you from one.
  • New quote requests: When a guest starts a project from your link or asks you for an estimate.
  • Budget alerts: When metered spend reaches your warning threshold. If your limit pauses new guest projects, we always tell you.
  • Tips and new features: Occasional emails about what the product can do.

Changes take effect at once. Each of these emails also says, at the bottom, which setting sends it.

Emails that are always sent#

Some emails cannot be turned off, because they are a record of something that happened to your account:

  • Account and security: the welcome email, confirming your email address, password reset links and password changes, changing your sign-in email, turning two-factor authentication on or off, new recovery codes, being signed out of other devices, a sign-in from a device your account has never used, and your account being deleted.
  • Billing: starting a subscription, changing plan or seats, a cancellation and undoing it, pausing and resuming, a receipt for each payment, a failed payment and its recovery, a payment your bank needs you to confirm, a refund, your subscription or trial ending, a change to your plan's price (at least 30 days ahead), the end of PayPal payments and your switch to a card, and reminders: three days before your trial ends, 14 days before a yearly plan renews, and a month before your card expires if that is before the next payment. Budget limit reached is always sent too, because it stops new guest projects.
  • Your organisation: invitations, joining, role changes, being removed or suspended, projects transferred to or from you, and changes to single sign-on.
  • Developers: an API key created, revoked or suspended, a website taken off a key's restrictions, a webhook turned off. See API keys and webhooks.
  • Support: the confirmation of a message you sent us, and our replies.

Billing emails go to the billing email in your billing details, or to your sign-in address if you left it empty.
