Comments

Leave notes at exact places on the map, read and delete them, let clients comment through a shared link, and get notified when someone comments.

Comments are notes pinned to a place on the map: "check this corner", "the gate is here", "is this area included?". Everyone who opens the project sees them, and you can let clients leave them too, without an account, through a shared link.

Read the comments#

Press the  Comments button on the right side of the map. The number on the button is how many comments the project has.

The panel lists every comment with its author, how long ago it was written, and its text. Press a comment to move the map to it and open it. When there are none, the panel says No comments on this project yet.

On the map, each comment is a marker. Click a marker to read the comment, its author and when it was written.

Add a comment#

  1. Press  Comments, then Add a comment. The panel closes and a bar at the top of the map says Click the map to leave a comment.
  2. Click the place the comment is about. A marker appears there, with a box to write in.
  3. Type your comment (up to 1,000 characters) and press Send. The app says Comment added.
  4. Click the next place to add another comment. When you have finished, press Done in the bar at the top, or press Esc.

While you are adding comments, clicks on the map place comments instead of drawing: the button is highlighted, and the magic button and the crosshair show . Pressing Esc while you write discards that comment; pressing it again leaves comment mode, as does Stop adding comments in the comments panel. Clicking somewhere else on the map before you send moves the comment there, keeping what you typed.

If you can edit the project, you can also start adding comments with Comment in the tools of the magic button; picking another tool there stops it.

Comments work the same way on the 3D map.

Delete a comment#

Press next to the comment in the panel, or Delete in the comment's marker on the map. The comment goes at once, and the message that follows offers  Undo to bring it back. A comment can be deleted by the person who wrote it, and by the project's owner and members.

To remove many comments at once, open  Clear Map, choose Choose and tick Comments: comments are never removed with Everything. See clear the map.

Restoring an earlier version of the project from its history also brings back the comments that version held. A deleted comment is kept for 30 days, then erased: see how long data is kept.

Let others comment#

The project's owner and members can always comment. Anyone else can comment only when the project is shared and comments are allowed:

  1. Open the project's share settings. See sharing projects.
  2. Set the access to View only or Public.
  3. Under Commenting, turn on Allow everyone to comment.

Anyone with the link can then place comments on the map, even without a Measure Map account. Visitors who are not signed in can add their name above the comment; if they leave it blank, the comment shows as Anonymous. Signed-in users comment under their own name and photo.

The share settings with View Only access and Allow everyone to comment turned on

Only the project's owner can change this setting; in an organisation, so can its owner, Admins and Managers. Turning it off, or making the project private, stops anyone outside the project from commenting; the comments already there stay.

Hide the comment markers#

To see the map without the markers, press  Show/Hide elements in the bottom toolbar and turn off  Comments. This only changes your own view, in this browser. The comments are still there, and the button still lists them. See display options.

Screenshots and exported pictures of the map never show comment markers.

Notifications#

When someone comments on a project, its owner and members are told, except the person who wrote the comment:

  • In the app, a notification in the bell, on the dashboard and in the map's top toolbar, says who commented on which project. Press it to open the project.
  • By email, with the comment and a link to the project, for everyone whose Project activity email preference is on (it is on unless you turn it off). Each person gets at most six of these emails an hour for one project; the notification in the app still comes for every comment.

Comments that the project's owner writes do not send notifications. See notifications to choose which emails you get.
