Project history

Go back to an earlier version of a project's map from its restore points and daily backups, and save a version yourself before a big change.

Measure Map Online keeps earlier versions of every project's map, so a cleared map, an import that replaced your work or a change you regret can be put back. Open a project's history to see them and restore one.

The Project history window with its restore points

Open the history#

Open the project, then either:

  • press (Menu) at the top left of the map and choose Project history; or
  • press  Clear Map in the toolbar at the bottom of the map and choose Project history.

The history is there for the people who can edit the project: its owner, its members and, in an organisation, the organisation's owner, Admins and Managers. It is not offered to visitors of a shared link or an embedded map, nor to organisation members with the Viewer role.

What is kept#

The history has two lists:

  • Restore points are saved right before a big change, and named after it: Before clearing the map, Before an import replaced the map and Before restoring an earlier version. You can also save one yourself (see below). Restore points are kept for 30 days, up to the latest 25.
  • Daily backups are made every night for each project that changed that day. The last 30 are kept.

Each entry says when it was made, who made it and what it holds, for example "12 areas · 3 lines · 40 spots · 5 comments". A version holds the project's shapes, map layers and comments, and a restore point also its groups.

Restore an earlier version#

  1. Pick Restore points or Daily backups.
  2. Press  Restore next to the version you want.
  3. Confirm with Restore.

The project's map is replaced by that version, for everyone working on it. Comments deleted since the version was made come back; comments written since stay. Before it does, Measure Map Online saves the current map as a restore point (Before restoring an earlier version), so a restore can itself be undone: press  Undo in the message that follows, or restore that restore point later.

Restoring an earlier version: the confirmation that the current map is saved first

Restoring a daily backup leaves the project's groups as they are, since daily backups do not hold groups.

Save a version now#

About to try something drastic? Press Save current version at the top of the history. The map as it is now is saved as a restore point (Saved restore point), ready to go back to.

Clearing the map#

Clear Map saves a restore point before it removes anything, comments included, so a cleared map can be restored from the history for 30 days. Right after clearing, the message offers  Undo as well. See clear the map.

If the restore point cannot be saved, nothing is cleared and the dialog says so. You can still press Clear anyway, but that clear cannot be restored from the history later: only  Undo, while the map stays open, brings it back.

To take back a single change while you work, use and in the bottom toolbar instead: see editing shapes.
