Points and spots

Read and edit the corner points of your shapes, and mark single places on the map with spots, icons that carry a name, a description, photos and coordinates.

Measure Map has two kinds of point:

  • Points are the corners of your polygons and lines. On the map they are shown as pins.
  • Spots stand on their own. Each is an icon with a name, used to mark a tree, a manhole, a sign, a meeting place or anything else at one spot.

Points#

Open a point#

Click a pin to open the point's panel. Pins are shown on the shape you are drawing, and on a locked shape when Show pins is on in its panel. They also need Pins on in  Show/Hide elements in the bottom toolbar. See pins.

When a pin is hidden or hard to click, choose the Info tool on the magic button, hold Shift and click near the point.

In a shape's panel, Pts opens its first point: from there the arrows step through the rest.

The point's panel#

  • The header shows the point's number, N1 for the first. The and arrows open the previous and next point of the same shape.
  • The shape's name, below the small map: press it to open the shape's panel.
  • Coordinates: its Latitude and Longitude, in the coordinate system chosen in the settings (decimal, DMS, DM or UTM: see coordinate systems). Type new values to move the point there. copies them.
  • Measurements:
    • Altitude: the height above sea level, looked up for you and shown in your distance unit. You can type your own.
    • Angle: the angle of the shape at this corner, in degrees. Typing a new angle swings the next point round, keeping its distance.
    • Azimuth: the compass bearing from the previous point to this one, in degrees from north. Typing a new bearing moves this point, keeping its distance from the previous one.
  • While the 3D map is on, 3D view: Height above ground (m) raises the point in the 3D view, and corners at different heights give a shape its slope. After a click on the 3D map, a button offers the height of what you clicked.
  • While the 3D map is on, Move puts arrows on the point: drag the red one to move it east or west and the green one north or south, at the same height, and the blue one to raise or lower it. A point another shape shares moves with it. Press Move again to take the arrows away.
  • Attach picture, Directions (opens Google Maps there) and Street View.
  • Remove, which deletes the point after you confirm. The shape closes up around the gap.
  • Description, and under Visibility: Show in map writes the description on the map next to the point, Show label background puts it on a background, and Show description in report includes it in reports.
  • Copy link and the point's pictures.

People who can only view the project see the figures, Directions and Street View, but cannot change anything. To move, add or delete points on the map, see editing shapes.

Spots#

Place a spot#

  1. In the top toolbar, open the  Crosshair mode button and choose Spot.
  2. With  Add on the magic button, hold Shift (or right-click the map to turn the crosshair on) and click where the spot goes. The Create spot window opens.
  3. Fill in what you need:
    • Name: shown on the map next to the icon while Show name in map is on. A spot left unnamed is numbered.
    • Description.
    • The icon (see below).
    • Photos: Attach photo adds a photo; press it again for more.
  4. Press Create.

Each click with the crosshair places a new spot, until you switch  Crosshair mode back to Polygon or Polyline.

Choose the icon#

Click the icon in the window, or in the spot's panel, to open the icon sets: Generic, Pavement, Road signs, Plants, Vehicles, Objects and Shapes. Click a set to open it and an icon to choose it.

Icons from the Shapes and Objects sets can take any colour: a colour button appears next to the icon to change it.

The icon and colour you choose in the Create spot window become the starting choice for your next spots in this browser.

The icon sets open, with the Plants set expanded

The spot's panel#

Click a spot's icon on the map to open its panel:

  • The name at the top: click it to rename the spot.
  • Coordinates, with Altitude: type new coordinates to move the spot.
  • Products, once you have products: a spot can carry one or several, priced per unit, such as a tree to plant. See estimates.
  • While the 3D map is on, 3D view: Height above ground (m) raises the spot in the 3D view. After a click on the 3D map, a button offers the height of what you clicked.
  • While the 3D map is on, Move puts arrows on the spot: drag the red one to move it east or west and the green one north or south, and the blue one to raise or lower it. Press Move again to take the arrows away.
  • Attach picture, Directions and Street View, and the red Remove.
  • Description, and under Visibility: Show name in map, Show label background and Show description in report.
  • Spot icon, to change its icon or colour.
  • Copy link and its pictures.

Move or delete a spot#

  • To move a spot, choose the Move tool on the magic button, click the spot, then click where it should go. Or type new coordinates in its panel.
  • To delete it, press Remove in its panel, or use the Delete tool of the magic button and click it. Either way you confirm first, and  Undo brings it back.

See the magic button for the tools.

Labels on the map#

Point descriptions and spot names are labels you can move: drag one to a clearer place. On a touch screen, touch and hold the label for half a second, then drag it. You cannot drag labels while the crosshair is on. See move a label.

Show/Hide elements in the bottom toolbar hides them all at once with Description labels and Spot labels, and hides the spots themselves with Spot: see display options. Their text size, and the size of pins and spot icons, are set in the settings: see polygon style and spot style.
